another beauty - so many big scars in the ridges - Im out of adjectives
the archives Big Standard & Coolamon are arbitrary anyway
the hat is for perspective obviously not decoration!
poor photography but nice scar - GG of course
I must ask Andrew Oldfield how long it takes to remove the bark
this one has broken off but still belongs in the 'Big' category
this scarface is breaking open so may not be upright much longer
another nice big scar around Cumborah that no one will ever see
profile shots are often easier with big scars - GG
big GG scar with unusually irregular sides
this may be the same scar from a different angle?
strangely long campfire scar - sheltering ashes overnight perhaps?
very big old fire related scar at GG camp
as close to perfect as you get in scar land
this one is excellent too - slightly shallower but wider
so many big scars point to many people living there often
Or were there many people forced up into the ridges in the 1880's flood?
Or escaping smallpox or settler violence along the rivers?
whatever the reason there are more big scars here than anywhere
the Gali gurranaa spring was badly damaged by White settlement
but it still supplies water to the township of Cumborah

very tall scar needing top & bottom shots to make sense of it
lovely big scar from the Cumborah ridges - the best scartrees ever
messy but enormous Gali gurranaar scar
smaller but neater GG scar - all individually totally unique
why so many big scars up there in the ridges?
making shelters or boats during the 1880s floods?
Or wrapping bodies? The bark was used for something important
some are barely noticeable at midday
whereas some you can't miss ...
when most of the bark is taken the tree sends out epicormic shoots
top & bottom views of this very long scar. Fire related I expect
some scars still take my breath away after all these years ...
they are simply stunning in their simplicity & balance
their epicormic shoots sometimes arch out like octopus tentacles
unique wooden sculptures adorning the ridges of Cumborah
unless you've walked among these gentle giants you will never 'get' Indig. culture
many are breaking down now but still retain their grace
some hide behind the surrounding scrub
wearing wilga like a cloak of green
south facing to protect the raw scarface from the sun
seemingly endless with dieback extending the original length
2 views of big GG scar with twist
this one is beautiful in its simplicity - GG of course
most big scars face south or east to stop the sapwood drying out
this means the face is often shaded in the winter when Im walking
inward facing scars are particularly hard to get a good picture of
also many big scars are half hidden by scrub trees - usually wilga
other times they are just perfect!
cracks are starting to form at the bottom of this old scar
here the entire scarface is starting to detach from the trunk
this one is a monster with the broken off epicormic shoot as a trunk
this one has character with a burl like a wart & rescarred centre
another scar for the ages (I hope) in the ridges
unfortunately this big scar is breaking down
its not possible to pick a favourite - too many to chose from
another half hidden cracking up scar
the top has broken off this scarred trunk but the face is still whole
this one looks familiar I need to go back & check for duplicates
so does this one? I wander so dont cover a grid in the ridges
lucky last for this upload session - the classic rectangular type
